Collection instructions: Gastric lavage specimens must be treated with equal parts 1% sodium bicarbonate prior to transport to reference laboratory.

Collection instructions: Collect 3 respiratory specimens for acid-fast smears and culture in patients with clinical and chest X-ray findings compatible with tuberculosis. These 3 specimens should be collected at 8 to 24 hour intervals ( 24 hours when possible) and should include as least 1 first-morning specimen.

Aseptic technique must be used in obtaining, and transport of specimen. Identification and susceptibility tests are billed separately from culture. SWABS ARE NOT RECOMMENDED FOR THE ISOLATION OF MYCOBACTERIUM, SINCE THEY PROVIDE LIMITED SPECIMEN MATERIAL.
