REGIONAL HOSPITAL PERFORMING
UPH Methodist Campus
UPH Pekin and UPH Proctor Hospitals will transport to UPH Methodist for testing
Collect
Collect the 24 hour urine in a clean container with secure lid. Sample must be collected at an alkaline pH and Refrigerated (2-8oC) Stability:during collection. For 24-hour collection, add 10 mL of 5% NaOH to container prior to collection.
Storage/Transport Temperature
5 mL aliquot from a well-mixed 24-hour or timed urine collection at 2-8o C.
Stability (from collection to initiation)
Ambient (room temperature): Unstable;
Alkaline urine samples are stable Ambient (room temperature) for 3 days;
Refrigerated: 3 days
Frozen (-20o C) Stability: 6 months at -20° C.
Unacceptable Conditions
Samples with pH < 8.0, frozen samples, urine collected in acid.
Urine containing fecal matter
Remarks
Random samples are acceptable but have no reference ranges and pH ranges must be adjusted to 8.0 if pH is < 8.0 by adding 5% NaOH (pediatric samples will require < 5-10 mL to reach the correct pH). Mix well and allow entire 24-hour collection to stand for 15 minuts. Recheck pH and adjust if necessary. Unpreserved samples or samples previously preserved with 6M HCI or boric acid will be rejected. Record total volume, collection time, and pH on test request form and aliquot.
