Collect

Eswab, nasophangeal swabs or nasal wash placed in sterile specimen container.
less than 5 years of age an Eswab, nasopharyngeal swab or nasal was placed in sterile specimen container.

 

Patients > than  5 years of age collect a nasopharyngeal swab in viral transport media and order a respiratory viral panel (RESPAT)

Storage/Transport Temperature

Eswabs and Swabs collected using the nasopharyngeal swab with transport media should be transported to laboratory within 1 hour of collection. Nasal washings can be held at 2-8° C for 24 hours prior to testing.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Ambient (room temperature): 30 minutes; 1 hour if collected on swab(s); Refrigerated: Nasal washings 24 hours

 

Nasopharyngeal eSwab – nasal wash – Ambient 4 hours, Refrigerated (2-8° C) Stability:24 hours

Unacceptable Conditions

Calcium Alginate swabs are not recommended for collection.

Remarks

Acceptable transport media include; Amies Media, Hanks Balanced Salt Solution, M4 Media, Stuart’s Media, M4-RT Media, M5 Media, and Saline. M6 media, Universal Transport media, Binax Elvtion Solution
