Collect
One light blue (3.2% buffered sodium citrate)
Specimen must be filled to the fill line on the tube. Mix thoroughly by gently inversion.
Storage/Transport Temperature
Ambient (20°C ± 5). If testing will not be performed within 4 hours, specimen must be spun within one hour of collection and seperated. Plasma should be transferred to a polyproplene plastic tube and frozen.
Stability (from collection to initiation)
Ambient: 4 hours whole blood/plasma. NOTE: If patient is on heparin therapy, stability is reduced. Separate plasma within one hour of collection; plasma remains stable for 2 hours at ambient temperature.
Refrigerated (2-8oC) Stability:2-8oC: not acceptable
Frozen Stability: 2 weeks
Unacceptable Conditions
Serum, clotted or grossly hemolyzed sample, underfilled/overfilled tube.
Refrigerated specimens (2-8oC)
Stability: samples, samples greater than 4 hours old (2 hours if patient is on heparin therapy)
Remarks
Draw specimen 1 hour before next dose of heparin if heparin is being given by intermittent infusion. If specimen is being drawn from cath line, discard 10 mL blood prior to draw.
