One - 6 mL Gold, or Green Top (lithium heparin)

Storage/Transport Temperature

1 mL of serum or hepanized plasma

Green tube:  If testing will be done right away
Gold tube, centrifuged: if speimen will NOT be received in the laboratory within 2 hours  Refrigerated

SERUM OR PLASMA SHOULD BE PHYSICALLY SEPARATED FROM CELLS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (MAXIMUM OF TWO HOURS FROM TIME OF COLLECTION)

Interpretive Data

Methodist:

For all ages, NT proBNP values <300 pg/mL have a 98% negative predictive value for excluding acute congestive heart failure (CHF)
 

NT proBNP values consistent with CHF are:

  METHODIST PEKIN & PROCTOR
< 50 years > 450 pg/mL >384 pg/mL
50 - 75 years > 900 pg/mL >763 pg/mL
> 75 years

> 1800 pg/ML

 >1524 pg/mL

Results for NT proBNP and BNP are not interchangeable.  Please ensure you are using the correct cutoffs when interpreting your results.

Notes

There is a chance of interference that Biotin can potentially alter results by 10%.  If patient is on Biotin supplemenation, beware of any abnormal results and have patient discontinue supplementation prior to drawing laboratory testing.
